Pizza From the Pumpkin Patch
Pumpkin Pizza submiited by Ashley Hardy from Mobile, AL
- 1 recipe pizza dough (use any prepared mix)
- 1-2 sm cans tomato paste
- 2-4 drops red and yellow food coloring, optional (just enough to achieve desired orange color for dough)
- 2-4 T italian seasoning (or dried oregano and basil)
- 2 cups cheddar cheese
- 1 pkg sliced pepperoni
For crust: Mix dough according to package directions. Add tomato paste, food coloring, and seasonings and blend well. Let rise or rest, whatever package says. After dough has risen, roll out on a floured surface. Using a pumkin shaped cookie cutter, cut out pumpkin shapes. Place on cookie sheet (lightly greased) and bake at 350 degrees F until dough is just done. (This step can be done a day ahead of time.) Decorating: After pumpkin pizza dough shapes come out of the oven, sprinkle them with the cheese. Cheddar is used because of the orange color but you can layer cheddar and mozzerella for added flavor (or any cheese you like.) Sprinkle some of the seasonings on the stem part of the pumpkin to make it green. To make the face, cut little triangles out of the pepperoni slices and arrange on top of cheese to form a jack-o-lantern. These can be left off for plain cheese pizzas. Broil until cheese has just melted. Remove from oven and let cool a little while as not to burn the fingers and/or mouths of those hungry little goblins who gobble these pizzas up! *Note: The tomato paste and seasonings in the dough take the place of a traditional pizza or marinara sauce on top of the pizza.
